Parents are fined for not sending their child to school
A Berwick couple have been fined for failing to send their child to school.
The case against the pair, from the Spittal area of the town, was found proved in their absence at Berwick Magistrates’ Court last Thursday.
The court heard the child had only attended school 75 per cent of the time over a six-month period. There had been 50 unauthorised absences and there was no medical reason.
Northumberland County Council solicitor Lisa Bishop said: “The council felt it was appropriate to offer a fixed penalty notice as a direct alternative to prosecution but it has not been paid.”
They were fined £440 and £94 in costs.
