Opera production takes the plaudits

Berwick Festival Opera's 2015 production of The Mikado, a co-production between The Maltings and Newcastle-based Rocket Opera, was declared runner-up in the '˜Performance of the Year' category at recent The Journal Culture Awards 2016 held in Sunderland.

The Maltings’ Artistic Director, Matthew Rooke, is confident that the Berwick Festival Opera programme for 2016 will maintain the superb standard set last year.

He said: “Our season of four operas ranges from the comic-with-bite panache of Gilbert and Sullivan to two darkly dramatic tales of the supernatural with The Turn of the Screw and a perfectly-timed-for-Halloween performance of The Vampyre, and ends on an emotional high with Poulenc’s enthralling one act drama La Voix Humaine.
