Not the best description
A recent article noted praise given to the Audela restaurant by the Good Food Guide (Berwick Advertiser, September 20), with the food being described as '˜unctuous and palate-tempting'.
Whoever wrote this in the Good Food Guide was surely not quite meaning that.
‘Palate-tempting’ certainly, but ‘unctuous’? Chambers dictionary gives as meanings ‘oily’, ‘suave’ and ‘smug’, which makes it sound like a disagreeably snooty kind of place.
I’m happy to add to plaudits by saying that three of us recently enjoyed an excellent meal there, served without a hint of smugness.
