Northumbria NHS staff '˜most satisfied'
Staff at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Trust are amongst the most satisfied in England according to results of the 2015 NHS Staff Survey, with 95 per cent feeling their role makes a difference to patient care.
Following a year of major change for thousands of NHS staff working across Northumberland and North Tyneside with the introduction of the trust’s new model of emergency care, Northumbria Healthcare achieved THE highest score of all acute hospitals in England for the number of staff recommending the organisation as a place to work or to receive treatment.
Northumbria Healthcare’s 9,000-strong workforce also voted the trust as THE best acute hospital trust in the NHS on several other measures used to assess levels of staff engagement, including:
· staff feeling secure about raising concerns about unsafe clinical practice
· fairness and effectiveness of procedures for reporting errors, near misses and incidents
· organisational interest in (and action on) staff health and wellbeing
· effective use of patient / service user feedback
· effective team working
· high numbers of staff believing the trust provides equal opportunities for career progression or promotion
· very low numbers of staff experiencing discrimination at work in the last 12 months and / or harassment, bullying or abuse from other staff
Leaders at Northumbria Healthcare have praised staff for their momentous efforts over the past 12 months, as the trust continues to embed its new model of emergency care and after a particularly busy winter period and hectic start to the New Year with high demand for services.

David Evans, chief executive of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, said: “To receive these excellent results in the year when we implemented one of the biggest clinical changes ever to take place in the NHS is a massive achievement and one which every one of our 9,000-strong workforce can feel rightly proud.
“When we introduced our new model of emergency care last year it was the culmination of a decade’s work, led by our frontline teams and something which affected every one of our staff and transformed the way we deliver care for our patients.
“We wholeheartedly appreciate the commitment and dedication of our staff throughout this change and as we continue to embed these changes and deliver improved outcomes for our patients across Northumberland and North Tyneside, I’d like to thank them for their efforts.”
According to the 2015 NHS Staff Survey, which incorporates 297 NHS organisations across England, Northumbria Healthcare was also the best trust in the country for staffing feeling that the organisation listens to feedback from patients and service users.
Northumbria has one of the largest patient experience programmes in the NHS as well as a widely-publicised ‘We’re Listening’ feedback channel to capture the views of staff and patients. The trust also runs one of the most active community engagement programmes in the NHS and openly encourages people to share their experiences of services via its multiple social media channels, with all feedback shared with both frontline teams and the trust’s board of directors.
Staff also rated the trust as the best in England for staff feeling the organisation takes an active interest in staff health and wellbeing. Northumbria runs an extensive programme to encourage staff to lead a more active lifestyle and eat more healthily, including fitness classes, local running groups, as well as a cycling to work scheme and making sure healthy options are available in restaurants across multiple sites.
In September 2015, the chief executive of the NHS, Simon Stevens, announced Northumbria Healthcare as one of only ten NHS organisations nationally, that will use its experience to help spearhead a comprehensive initiative to boost the health and wellbeing of NHS staff across the country.

“Our staff are the heart of our organisation and we place great emphasis on looking after their health and wellbeing and on creating an environment where they can really enjoy their work. We also place great emphasis on listening to patients so it is particularly pleasing to have the importance of this recognised by our staff as we continue to improve the quality of everything we do.
“The changes we have made to improve patient care in the past year simply would not have been possible without the support of our staff and whilst these survey results are fantastic, we are certainly not complacent. As we move into another exciting chapter for the trust, our priority is to make sure we continue to support and nurture our workforce so that can we can further push the boundaries of excellence and continuously improve the care and experience we offer our patients.”
The NHS Staff Survey, which seeks the views of staff working across England, is the largest survey of staff opinion in the UK. It is recognised as an important way of ensuring that the views of staff working in the NHS inform local improvements and that staff have their say in the delivery of high quality, safe and effective care. Overall Northumbria Healthcare was rated in the top 20 per cent of trusts in 28 of the 32 indicators and the best trust in England on 11 of the 32.
