Northumberland is named top UK destination by travel magazine
Northumberland has been named the UK's top destination.
Readers of Wanderlust magazine voted the county the winner at the Destinations Travel Show at London’s Olympia.
The county features one national park, two Areas of Outstanding National Beauty, a beautiful coastline and impressive landmarks – all of which were a hit with visitors.
Northumberland has featured in the top 10 since the award was introduced in 2014, and moved up from fourth place last year.
It secured its first win thanks to a satisfaction rating of 95 per cent from Wanderlust’s readers.
The Scottish Highlands was pipped to the post, coming in second place, with Dartmoor third, and the Lake District fourth.
There was no place in the top 10 for last year’s winner, Snowdonia, while Edinburgh was the only city to feature, in seventh place.
Lyn Hughes, Wanderlust’s founder and editor in chief, said: “With Northumberland and its International Dark Sky Park topping the bill in the UK, it would appear that getting away from light pollution and into the wildest parts of the UK is definitely a favourite with our readers.
“I have only visited once myself, but was blown away by the county’s dramatic beaches, moorland and forest, as well as historical sites such as Lindisfarne Abbey. It really is an underrated travel gem.”
