Alongside colleagues from Eyemouth Coastguard, a search of the beach and surrounding footpaths was commenced while Police Scotland carried out investigations into the items that were found.

After around an hour of searching, and with nothing else to suggest anyone was in danger, teams were stood down from the search and returned to station.

Berwick Coastguard, posting on Facebook, said: “In this particular situation, you may worry that it is a waste of time to alert the Coastguard.

"However, we would much rather be called out to investigate and find nothing than never be called when someone is in need of help. We will never criticise anyone for doing the right thing.”
