Newbiggin shock Harrow with NNL defeat
The North Northumberland League returned in ernest after the festive break on Saturday with ten teams in action.
In the Anderson Cup preliminary round there were wins for North Sunderland (over Embleton) and Wooler (against Rothbury).
In the league, Belford beat Craster, Newbiggin edged a 1-0 win against defending champions Tweedmouth Harrow, whilst Amble St Cuthbery hit double figures against the winless Alnwick Reserves.

A solid first half performance saw the home club net three times during the opening 45, and although James Woolley netted late in the second half for Embleton, two further goals from North Sunderland gave them a comfortable win.
Goalscorers for the Seahouses side were Ryan Thompson (2), Judd Donohoe , Chris Gardiner and Leon Midgeley .
In a good wind affected game, Dan Thompson gave Rothbury the lead before Kyle Jeffrey equalised for Wooler with a long range effort.
Just before half time Greg Woodburn restored the Rothbury lead.
After the break a second from Jeffrey saw Wooler draw level and then Luke Strangeways netted to put the home side ahead. However, Rothbury came back and a James Jackson goal sent the game into extra time .
The first period of extra time saw no further goals, but a Tom Allan goal in the second period gave Wooler the win.
Amble St Cuthbert 10
Alnwick Town Res 1
Ross Martin netted in the first half for Alnwick but it proved to be a consolation goal as Amble netted seven times before the half time whistle.
The game was a bit more even during the second half with Amble netting another three to seal a comfortable win.
Connor Stroughton led the way with four goals, Dan Moyle netted two with single strikes by Mark Ellis, Liam Ramsay, Aaron Thompson and Luke Lawrence making up the final total.
Craster Rovers 1
After a good, hard fought game Belford came away with three valuable points.
Paul Muers had given Belford the lead with a Sean Angus goal equalising for Craster just before half time.
In the second half Belford made the most of their chances as Liam Romaines, Darren Thompson and Toby Sumpton all scored to secure the win.
Newbiggin Res 1
Tweedmouth Harrow 0
Second top, and defending champions, Tweedmouth harrow were shocked with a 1-0 away defeat at Newbiggin.
In a tough, competitive match, the only goal of the game was scored by Jamie Davidson after 35 minutes.
