New signage is proposed for former Advertiser office

It is planned to replace the Berwickshire News element with Tweedmouth Dental Clinic, retaining the Berwick Advertiser lettering.

Berwick Town Council has made no objection.

A final decision will be made by Northumberland County Council.

The proposed new signage has been carefully chosen to replicate current signage and to compliment the building, keeping it as original as possible to the currently installed signage, without disturbing the characteristics of the building and surrounding area.

‘We aim to keep a like for like appearance in style, colour and size of the sign,’ states a report with the application.

‘No harm will come to the building or any of the surrounding areas to the building including any of the exterior, characteristic or features when the signage is replaced.’

Ian McCaffery, county council building conservation officer, said: “We raise no objection to the applied letters which are less intrusive than a full fascia sign allowing the underlying stonework to be appreciated. The signage is not illuminated. The letters are in a timber like substance and will be painted. We accept the proposal as giving rise to no significant harm to a designated heritage asset.”

The Berwick Advertiser and Berwickshire News moved out of the building in 2014 are now based in the neighbouring Berwick Workspace.
