New outdoor classroom opened at Berwick school
The new outdoor classroom at Berwick St Mary's First School, funded with £4,000 from the Tesco Bags of Help scheme, has been officially opened.
Claire Thompson, who led the outdoor project, said it will be used primarily for the teaching of science and outdoor skills, but will also be used as a gallery, community setting and will even be a home for a special visitor in December.
Headteacher Gary Hilton explained this is the culmination of a two-year initiative to provide the children with an exciting and imaginative outdoor learning environment, and was only made possible by the fantastic donation from Tesco.
Laura Percy-Doolan, service manager of Berwick Tesco, explained that St Mary’s is only the latest in a series of community initiatives through the Tesco Bags of Help Scheme, which so far has invested more than £120,000 into local Berwick projects. Laura was joined by Rev Dennis Handley at the opening.
