MP reaffirms support for Chain Bridge
Berwick MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan visited the Friends of the Union Chain Bridge's Heritage Open Day stand on Saturday to re-affirm her support for the campaign to complete the bridge's restoration in time for its bicentenary in 2020.
Mrs Trevelyan was one of a host of visitors from across the country during the two-day event, many of them in response to recent publicity about the bridge’s deteriorating state and the urgent need to raise £7million to fund a full programme of repair and restoration to secure its future as the oldest suspension bridge in the world still carrying vehicles. It is hoped to secure Heritage Lottery funding, while cross-border councils have also contributed.
