Berwick MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan discusses the restoration campaign with Robert Hunter, chairman of the Friends of the Union Chain Bridge.

Mrs Trevelyan was one of a host of visitors from across the country during the two-day event, many of them in response to recent publicity about the bridge’s deteriorating state and the urgent need to raise £7million to fund a full programme of repair and restoration to secure its future as the oldest suspension bridge in the world still carrying vehicles. It is hoped to secure Heritage Lottery funding, while cross-border councils have also contributed.
