Berwick MP Anne-Marie Trevelyan with Jim Herbert and Frank Flannigan at the Brown Bear in Berwick.

The brown Bear on Hide Hill re-opened in December after an extensive refurbishment.

Mrs Trevelyan went along to see the results for herself, after owner Frank Flannigan brought in Mark Dodds to head the project.

Mr Dodds, who has a reputation for turning around pubs in particular with the introduction of real ales, has also introduced an extensive wine list and the pub will soon be serving food.

Anne-Marie said: “The Brown Bear is a real Berwick institution, so it was a real pleasure to go back now the refurbishment is complete to see the results for myself. There is so much history behind this pub, and I am so pleased the owner, Frank, has worked with the local community to breathe new life into it and reinvigorate it once more.

“Having welcoming, modern and yet iconic pubs like the Brown Bear are crucial to the continued resurgence of Berwick as a tourism hub, along with the opening of the new hotel.

“The team behind the regeneration worked with the community at every stage of the project, and that is evident in the result. It’s great to have the Brown Bear back once more and I am sure it will be a great success with locals and visitors alike!”
