MP: Can't police ensure safety?
I was reassured to learn from Michael Gallico that the abandonment of our MP's annual summer constituency perambulation was because of security concerns rather than because it had become an inconvenience, (Berwick Advertiser, July 19).
But I am concerned that any MP, let alone one in the Ministry of Defence, should feel so insecure in rural Northumberland as to avoid publicising her whereabouts in advance.
What are the results of Northumbria Police’s investigations into the series of death threats made against her?
I do, indeed, remember the murder of Jo Cox, but I note that Tracy Brabin, her female successor as MP for Batley and Spen, still publicises regular drop-in sessions throughout her constituency on her website.
I also understand that John Lamont was accompanied on his Border perambulation by his female MSP colleague Rachael Hamilton.
Why, then, is so much of our county apparently a no-go area for our MP?
Cannot our very own Police and Crime Commissioner ensure the safety of a female MP in her own constituency?
