More success for Berwick Rugby as 2nds win County Cup
Berwick RFC 2nds 34-7 Ashington 2nds
Berwick Rugby Club 2nds won more silverware for the club when they beat Ashington 2nds in the final of the Northumberland 2nd XV Cup at Morpeth on Saturday afternoon.
The Scremerston outfit, riding on the backs of their 1st XV who are enjoying a highly successful season in their own right, dominated the early proceedings and found themselves 24-0 up by half-time.
Jordan Jackson scored the opening try, converted by Thompson. Ross MacPherson added a second try and Thompson again converted to make it 14-0.
A third try followed for Nicholson, but this time the conversion attempt bounced back off a post (19-0).
Then, just before half-time, Jackson went over for his second score (24-0) but again the conversion hit the woodwork.
Early in the second half Ashington reduced the deficit when a converted try brought them back to 24-7, but the Berwick Bears roared again and James Jackson ran the ball from his own half to touch down for a try, converted by Thompson for 31-7.
Late in the game Berwick were awarded a penalty and Thompson kicked it to guarantee the trophy at 34-7.
In what has been a highly successful season for Berwick, the 1st XV have already won East League 2, gaining promotion to the National Leagues next season.
They have also won the Border Shield and will play Greenock Wanderers in the final of the National Shield at Murrayfield on April 27.
