Mistake to reduce beds
Under the current proposals for the new Berwick hospital, inpatient beds are to be reduced from 20 to 16 '˜in response to dwindling demand'. Really?
This summer, two friends of mine, both residents of Berwick, were due to be discharged from Cramlington. Berwick was full so they were sent to Alnwick, a 60-mile round trip for family and friends to visit.
This is not the time of year for peak demand and future need is likely to rise.
Reducing the number of beds available in Berwick is a mistake.
