Memories of a kind couple

I live in Devon and have done family history for some years.

Near the end of the Second World War my father was posted to Berwick.

My mother travelled by train with my baby brother to go to see him. They stayed with a couple called Bert and Bridget Coolin, who they said were very kind to them.

My parents were John and Winifred Austin and they decided to have my brother’s Christening while in Berwick. Mr and Mrs Coolin were the chosen Godparents.

When my parents left the area they were not good at keeping in touch and never travelled that far north again, living most of their lives in Exeter.

I was born nine months after their stay in Berwick.

My parents are long dead now and I am going through some old papers. I found the names of Bert and Bridget Coolin and wondered if any of their family still live in the Berwick area.

If so, please get in touch via the Berwick Advertiser.
