Mayor is raising cash for youth of Berwick
Youth groups are set to benefit from the fund-raising efforts of the Mayor of Berwick during his year in office.
Cllr Ivor Dixon will be hosting a number of fund-raising events over the next 12 months.
He was particularly keen to ensure that all money raised is for the benefit of people living in the town.
He envisages a small-scale version of the High Sheriff awards, where youth organisations can apply for grant assistance.
“It’s been a difficult choice,” he admitted. “There are so many deserving causes out there but I wanted to do something that would help the youth organisations in the town which don’t get a lot of funding from elsewhere.
“Groups like the scouts and cubs, guides, brownies and beavers, army and air cadets could all do with a helping hand and if I can help in any way through my fund-raising efforts as mayor then I’ll be delighted.”
Last year’s mayor, Cllr Hazel Bettison, raised more than £4,000 for Berwick RNLI in her year as chief citizen.
“There will be a number of fund-raising events over the coming months,” said Cllr Dixon, announcing his charity at a town council meeting.
“We’ll have to wait and see how much they raise but even a little amount could be really useful for small groups that exist on a shoestring.”
Youth groups should register their interest in funding by contacting Joyce Benton, Sergeant-at-Mace, Berwick. Email email@example.com or drop the details into the town hall.
