MARKET: An appetite for local produce

I wholeheartedly support the call for a regular Berwick farmers' market, offering people the chance to buy local produce from local producers.

As things stand, it is absolutely astonishing that, apart from a few notable exceptions, a town situated as Berwick is should only have what I consider is an embarrassing apology for a market, offering virtually none of the wealth of wonderful meat, game, vegetables and seafood that are specific to the area.

The success of the annual Food and Beer Festival amply demonstrates that Berwick has an appetite – in every sense of the word – for food that hasn’t traipsed across weary food miles, and isn’t exactly the same as can be found in every supermarket across the country.

And a decent farmers’ market would also bring more people into the town to spend their money.

I, therefore, urge the council and producers to come together to create a first-class farmers’ market.
