The seven-year-old’s tale about a witch and her magic cat was commended by this year’s judges and she was invited to the final at Hampton Court Palace.

The event was broadcast live on Friday morning during a special edition of the Chris Evans Breakfast Show.

Chris Evans has been championing the competition – aimed at 5-13 year olds – through his Radio 2 show.

This year, there were 135,000 entries, from which 50 finalists were chosen.

After the broadcast, Marin and her mum Caroline were able to mingle with the stars and even managed an inspiring chat with the Duchess of Cornwall.

Caroline said: “It was a great day and Marin absolutely loved meeting all of the authors and celebrities. She is especially proud of her autographs from David Walliams and the Duchess. She has started on her entry for next year already!”

Other well-known faces at the reception included Dara O Briain, Jason Issacs, Jim Broadbent, Shobna Gulati and singer Alexandra Burke.

Afterwards, guests were able to tour the gardens and the famous maze.
