Lizzie tumbles her way to gold in Birmingham
Lizzie Foxton, from Berwick, secured her first British Gymnastics gold medal at the Tumbling Regional Team Finals and NDP Qualification 2017 in Birmingham at the weekend.
Three super tumble runs combined for a gold medal position and, as part of the British Gymnastics North Team, she helped the region – the North – win team gold as well.
Her total score of 77.750, as podium gold, also means she has secured a position in the individual finals on July 8-9 at Telford.
This was a truly national competition, with gymnast tumblers from Scotland, Yorkshire, West Midlands, Wales, the South, South East, East, North of England and South West all competing in her group.
It was an outstanding achievement for Lizzie and all connected with her, including DCGymnastics in Berwick where she trains up to 12 hours every week, are immensely proud.
Her head coach Debbie Couch said: “Every emotion was experienced and, importantly, controlled by Lizzie (aged nine) in front of a significant audience, while performing demanding tumbling skills at a massive arena often used for concerts by international musicians.
“To compete against 16 other focussed, driven and competitive tumblers, in such a significant arena, then also to win, was truly special.”
Lizzie said it was ‘amazing, brilliant and great’.
Her parents, who travelled to Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena in support, said: “We are so proud of Lizzie’s achievements. The event itself was emotional, not to mention stressful (for us as parents), but Lizzie took it in her stride.”
