Previously home to kings of Northumbria, the castle’s Library House is available for rent for £625 per calendar month.

Located next to the Clock Tower to the north west of the castle grounds, the two-bedroom house has its own secluded doorway.

In addition to generous living space and a double bedroom on the ground floor, stairs lead up to a master bedroom which has awe-inspiring views over to the Farne Islands.

The castle has belonged to the Armstrong family since the 19th century, and is open to the public throughout the year.

It also hosts weddings and corporate events and has been used as a film and television location since the 1920s, featuring in films such as Ivanhoe (1982), El Cid (1961), Mary, Queen of Scots (1971), Elizabeth (1998) and both the 1971 and 2015 adaptions of Macbeth.

Annabel Williamson, of Savills’ Wooler office, said: “Bamburgh Castle is a very special place and you can feel the sense of history as soon as you set foot in its grounds.

“It has been home to the Armstong family since 1845. They take their role as custodians of this iconic building very seriously and it has been carefully maintained over hundreds of years.

“This is a rare opportunity to live in a property that has been featured numerous times on the silver screen and is an important part of British history.”
