Jane Hardy, who led the clean-up, thanked all those who turned out to help.

She said it was particularly disappointing to find so many empty beer cans and bottles in the dunes just below the caravan park.

She said: “Thank goodness there are so many good souls that cleared up. A dog/child/wildlife might have had a nasty cut on the broken glass.”

Regular litter picks are also being held in the Berwick area where winter storms often result in large volumes of debris being left on beaches such as Spittal and Pier Road.

Berwick Town Council clerk, Gareth Davies, speaking at last week’s local services committee, said: “We’re looking forward to increased levels of activity once the weather is more pleasant.”

Coun Lesley Stephenson, also one of the regular beach clean volunteers, added: “The Pier Road beach cleans have been very well supported indeed. With the recent good weather it’s not been too difficult. They are working very well.”
