Cllr Gavin Jones

Gavin Jones has been nominated for re-election to Northumberland County Council by the Liberal Democrats.

He says he will endeavour to make sure Berwick attracts investment, jobs and opportunities.

“I have worked with others, regardless of politics, to secure investment in Berwick,” he said.

“I think it’s critical to make sure we attract investment in difficult, long-derelict sites, which we have done for sites such as Walkergate and the Cowe Buildings.

“Private investors have demonstrated confidence in the town with other long derelict sites being addressed.

“Not all regeneration has been welcomed, but I’ve always focused on doing my best for the town, weighing up the likelihood of any other funding opportunities coming forward, along with how many jobs are created or protected.

“The same is true of the coach park – for 20 years or more the town has discussed a coach park. The town will shortly have one.

“The location may not be everyone’s first choice, but having coaches coming inside the walls brings tourists into the town, along with an opportunity to prove the business case for a bigger or better solution.

“I hope residents will give me their support to keep working on both the projects and the more ambitious opportunities: making sure we see the return of over 100 county council jobs to Berwick, securing Berwick’s tourism potential as a heritage hub and attracting funding for the Barracks, delivering the £19million new leisure centre, attracting additional further education to the town, along with resolving the railway station and long-stay parking issues.”

Others standing in Berwick North are Jim Herbert and Anne Forbes (both independent) and Catherine Seymour (Conservative).
