The 26 year-old, who had been voted to skipper the squad by his fellow athletes, was competing in the 800m.

In his heats on Friday he qualified in second place, but in the semi’s on Saturday he tripped and fell and was subsequently disqualified.

“I don’t really know what happened,” he said afterwards. “There was a big gap on the inside as we went through 400m and I thought I’d take it. I got a nudge. I managed to get through but I think I went over on my own two feet just with getting knocked off balance.

Learmonth, who broke his hand after falling in a Grand Prix meeting in Birmingham last month added: “I’m heartbroken. I just can’t believe that’s happened twice in two weeks. It’s devastating. I don’t really know what else to say. It’s been a tough indoor season for me.”

Learmonth also hit out at internet trolls who called him the Elise Christie of athletics.

Speed-skater Christie fell twice during the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics.“I hope one day I can be half as great as Elise,” he tweeted. “She’s a world and European champion.”
