The meeting started with the annual general meeting and was opened by our retiring chairman Ian Wilkinson, who inducted our new chairman Chris Hull and was presented with his ex-chairman's tie.
After birthday greetings and apologies for absence, the business of the AGM was carried out. The officers were re-elected en masse and Tony Willis confirmed as our new vice-chairman.
All reports were accepted including the secretary’s, which highlighted the fact that we still had room for a few more members. Anyone wishing to join should contact our secretary, Fraser Suffield on 01665 576236.
We were then introduced to our speaker Mrs Isabel Gordon, who spoke on “Dying for a Cuppa – a history of Tea”.
Her exemplary lecture told of tea from China and India, of Japanese tea ceremonies, of Charles II and Catherine de Braganza’s love of tea and how the Opium Wars were due to the British trade imbalance caused by the purchase of Chinese tea.
The secrets of how tea is produced and how the plants were obtained together with the tea clipper tales were only part of an absorbing and fascinating lecture.
After a question and answer session thanks for this very entertaining lecture were given by Gordon Cowan.
