The need to do more to make people aware of the need to support the Alzheimer's Society has persuaded a young Berwick student, Laura Tait, to raise funds by running The Great North Run in September.

Laura, who is writing for the Advertiser, was guest speaker at Berwick Rotary Club in the rugby club on Tuesday. Without any experience she took up running, began to set targets and turn in personal best performances.

The i newsletter cut through the noise

An invitation to her to take part in the famous North East half marathon convinced her to take running more seriously and to embark on the long and tough training schedule.

The fact that her grandmother had Alzheimer’s, and the way in which her mother coped, has become the inspiration for her. The society knows that people must become aware of the situation, and as more people are living longer the problem will grow.

It was vital that more was done to assist those who suffer from it.
