Latest news from Berwick Rotary Club
It was an evening of memories for Berwick Rotarians on Tuesday when former newsagent John Gardiner presented A Window on Spittal From 1974-86, when he was in business there.
He recalled the numerous shops, which have nearly all closed, the former public house landlords, the chalets which house summer visitors and a host of personalities.
They included Claude Cooper, Johnny Smith, pop star Susan Maughan, who lived in The Blenheim Hotel, and catamaran builder Phil Brewer, who built boats for a worldwide clientele.
In an excellent talk, he recalled 52 businesses and people he had served while running his business from premises in the Main Street.
He circulated a map pinpointing the places he mentioned, stretching from the north end of Main Street to Hud’s Head, two holiday caravan parks and an eel-catching development.
