He was making a quick return visit after a successful talk on Old Spittal. His first shop was in Main Street, Spittal, before he moved to premises to Marygate.

The job, he said, was challenging and involved long hours. When he started there were 11 newsagents in Berwick, Spittal, Tweedmouth, Highfields and East Ord, and he recalled many of the personalities who ran the businesses.

They handled large numbers of newspapers on a daily basis, as well as magazines and other periodicals.

He explained the way in which the papers were distributed, the delivery service run by boys and girls – he employed 20 at one time – giving youngsters an opportunity to make money.
