Latest news from Berwick Rotary Club
High quality books published by the Spittal firm of Martin's were shown to Berwick Rotary Club by guest speaker Chris Hardie, managing director and club vice-president.
He said the physical book was proving to be very popular and sales were growing, while ebooks had declined by 10 per cent.
Mr Hardie described the huge developments made online by the introduction of Kindle and the creation of a large library of the classics at low cost. Things started to go wrong and the printed book publishers carried on well. The industry was now in the ‘perfect storm’.
His Spittal firm is busy, and many prefer the printed book. The firm maintains its vital role in education, poetry is more popular than ever, books of charts for shipping are rolling off the presses, as well as bedtime stories, history, guide books, local publishing, and personalised items too.
The books still retained a high intrinsic value in an era where other forms had built up a large following.
