New chairman Michael Wright said the strong support of the members was vital if that was to continue. He promised to do his best in his new role, he was invested with his chain of office by retiring chairman Harry Wilson.

In its early years the club met in The King’s Arms Hotel, had a membership of 100 and a substantial waiting list. It now meets every Wednesday in the parish centre.

A high standard of speaker – including an ex-Prime Minister – has been a feature and that was maintained by the first guest of 2018, Mr John Smithson, of Berwick.
