Latest news from Berwick Probus Club
The Czechoslovakian people are very close to the heart of Scott Weightman, who teaches English to workers with ABB.
Guest speaker at Berwick Probus Club, he gave a very interesting talk on the history of the country, which was set up in 1918 after the Treaty of Versailles.
He said the first 20 years were profitable and it was in the top 10 economies. Germany then occupied it and it suffered “seven years of hell”. After the war ended in 1945 it became Russian-controlled and suffered again.
Mr Weightman, then a teacher in Berwick, began to take students to the country following ‘The Velvet Revolution’ in 1988 and formed many close relationships with the Czechs.
The country was now settled and progressing well, and its excellent transport system provided free travel for all over 70s.
His links with ABB began in 1997.
