The River Tweed has been at the centre of major historical events since the earliest times.

On Tuesday, January 17, Derek Sharman MBE begins a series of eight lectures, tracing these events from pre-history though the Roman era, the rise and fall of the Kingdom of Northumbria, the creation of the Anglo-Scottish Border, the Reivers, Civil War, and the Agricultural and Industrial Revolutions.

The lectures will be held each Tuesday at the William Elder Building in Castlegate, from 10am to noon. The cost for the full series is £48, including refreshments, and all are welcome.

Tuesday also sees the start of Gill Walton’s new series of life drawing classes. This structured course is aimed at beginners up to intermediate level. Practising artists who would like to work with a life-model are welcome.

Life Drawing is a fundamental skill for those who are serious about improving their art. It is a challenging subject, but this course provides a lot of guidance and tuition.

There are five classes on Tuesdays, between 1pm and 3.30pm, at the Conference Rooms, YHA Berwick, Dewars Lane Granary. The cost is £70.
