The meeting was opened with a tribute being paid to Mrs Joan Elder, who for many years did stalwart work for CRUK and many other groups in the town. Her enthusiastic organising of numerous events raised substantial amounts of money for the charity. She will be sadly missed.

President Peter Herdman proposed that the committee send their condolences to Mrs Elder’s family. The secretary will arrange this.

The treasurer reported that we have had a good year with fund-raising. We are always grateful for donations, notably those from bereaved families who kindly send us donations in memory of their loved ones. Every donation is acknowledged.

The committee welcomed Carolyn Reynolds, who has been appointed by CRUK to work in the North East, dealing with fund-raising, raising the profile of the charity and supporting local branches.

There are several events planned for the next few months.

A Summer Fair in the Guildhall on Saturday, June 18, will have stalls, refreshments, a raffle with cash prizes and competitions. This is always a great event, which is well supported. Everyone welcome.

The Christmas Fair will be on December 10.

On January 21, 2017, it will be the 60th anniversary of the founding of the local branch of what was then the British Empire Cancer Research Campaign. A celebration is being organised, with details being announced later in the year. There are documents from that time which it is hoped can be displayed at the event.

The AGM will be held in Berlinos Restaurant on June 9, at 7pm.

Anyone interested in the work of the committee and who would perhaps like to help with our fund-raising should please come along.
