Brendan Kenny will give a talk on Byzantium: The Concept Of A City.

The talk will give an overview of the significance to European civilisation of the Byzantine Empire, singling out the achievements of charismatic emperors Constantine I and the joint rulers, Justinian and Theodora. It will identify their military, legal and administrative reforms, as well as their characters as rulers.

Brendan will also consider the fluctuating assessments over time by historians, whether contemporary, such as Procopius, or later, such as Gibbon.

The second part of the talk will discuss the revival of interest in Byzantine art and architecture in the 19th century and the contrasting views of its culture as either a repository of the sacred or a source of oriental exoticism and scandal.

The talk will be illustrated with slides.

All are welcome. There will be a charge of £2 for visitors. For further information contact the secretary on 01289 308767.
