Keep town clean for all
I am not a Berwick person born and bred, I moved here from Lincolnshire in 1979, having driven up here many times in pursuit of my sport of sub-aqua diving and come to love the area.
I applied for and got a job as a fishery officer with Northumberland Sea Fisheries, a job I loved.
However, this lovely town can be spoilt by careless people who drop litter.
There is a litter bin outside my shop in Castlegate and not a day goes past that I don’t pick up litter and bin it.
Added to this, the same bin has the facility to dispose of cigarette butts, but many are just thrown down next to the bin. You have to ask why?
The other litter is dog fouling.
I live in Highfields where the majority of people do pick up after their dogs. However, there are some who don’t.
There is one person who most days puts the mess in a poo bag, then leaves the bag on the pavement. Where is the sense in that?
For the sake of the rest of us, bin it.
Some people like to walk their dog in the North Road cemetery. Again, most clean up after their dog, including my partner. However, once again, there are those who don’t clean up after them.
This, eventually, could lead to all dogs being banned from the area, thus spoiling it for everyone.
It is surely not too much to ask to keep a lovely town free from litter and dog mess for the benefit of everyone.
P.S. At 82 this year, am I the oldest shopkeeper in town?
