Ivy growth concerns gardeners
Allotment holders have asked for ivy to be cut back from boundary walls.
Berwick Town Council has been contacted by the secretary of the Lion Allotments Committee raising concerns about ivy growing up and over one of the boundary walls.
Members of the council’s finance committee agreed the problem should be addressed.
Mayor Hazel Bettison said: “The ivy is growing into the walls and is actually causing them to start crumbling. It’s not been cut back for a good few years and because of that is embedding itself into the stonework.”
Councillor Gordon McLean added: “If it’s got into the walls, then it might need repointing.”
The council, under the terms of its lease with Berwick Preservation Trust, must maintain the walls.
