Humbled by your help

May I say a big thank-you to the bearded gentleman from Grantshouse, who, despite having just returned from a fishing trip in the Oban and Loch Katrine areas, became aware that a defective knee joint had seized and drove me to Houndwodd Crematorium about four miles away.

It was a lovely day and I had intended walking to the establishment to pay my last respects to Margaret, a true ambassador of her home town of Berwick, as indeed is her husband Fred.

They typified Berwickers in general. Margaret as an adored wife and mother, and Fred a former PSV driver and member of a local cycling business.

Mourners appreciated a beautiful service of farewell. Feeling as I did, socialising was out of the equation and I intended to be on the next bus home.

I was overwhelmed when Fred’s cousin Irene and Brenda Collins, of The Free Trade in Castlegate, asked a lady called Cath if her husband and her could give me a lift. This was done without any ado.

Thank you all for your kindness on that sad day. I still feel very much humbled.
