Plans have been announced for a significant upgrade of Highcliffe play park in Spittal, which will include more play equipment suitable for older children and a multi-use games area, which includes goal posts and basketball hoops.

Coun Georgina Hill, member for Berwick East, is planning to commit a significant part of her Northumberland County Council local improvement schemes budget to enhance the park and will be asking Berwick Town Council to match-fund this.

In recent years, play parks at Flagstaff Park, Osborne Place and Grove Gardens South have been revamped.

Coun Hill said: “With the work done in play plays elsewhere, there is an obvious gap in upper Spittal and children in the Highcliffe and Eastcliffe area deserve a decent play park too. We also need to provide more things for children across the town to do.

At the moment there is a limited amount of play equipment at Highcliffe, which is predominantly suitable for the toddler age group. I hope the town council will support this project and I am also speaking to another organisation who may provide some additional funding.”

She has also arranged a drop in session for residents at the Jubilee Club between 3pm - 6pm on Tuesday, July 17 to get feedback on the draft plans.

“I hope as many residents as possible will come along,” she added.
