Help them in hard times

Our small shops in the high street get fewer and fewer, but a shining example of a dedicated shopkeeper in charge of a delightful and well-stocked shop is Border Crafts and Models in Castlegate.

The shopkeeper, who has been there for years, said his most difficult time is from January to Easter when customers are few and far between. The summer season makes things worthwhile.

I think these small shops should be encouraged or else we shall lose them.

Couldn’t the town council see its way to helping them survive through the hard months by waiving council tax or subsidising them in some way? Even a little would help.

There are some good things happening on the high street and around Berwick in general, but please no more closures of small shops – support them.
