Harrow and Highfields into semi-finals of Collie Cup in BAL
It was a good day for Berwick sides in the Border Amateur League with two of them, Highfields and Tweedmouth Harrow, progressing to the semi-finals of the Collie Cup.
Tweedmouth Amateurs won 6-2 at home in the B League, but Berwick Colts suffered a 6-1 defeat away to Newtown in the C League.
Tweedmouth Ams 6
Tweedmouth Amateurs welcomed Biggar to the Five Arches as their second visitors of the season in the Border Amateur B Division and they needed to make home advantage work.
The Ammies took the lead after ten minutes with Kev Lee netting his first goal for the club, but it was cancelled out on 20 minutes with a Biggar equaliser which saw the sides level at the break.
This was another game that would hinge on Tweedmouth’s second half performance and after a stern word from the management it was in evidence from the start.
Just five minutes after the re-start Lee became the provider as he found Lauder with a fine through ball to restore their lead.
On 55 minutes Kyle Wood extended the advantage with a perfectly timed header from a Sykes corner.
And five minutes later Matty Tait got on the end of an Aaron Hope corner to make it 4-1.
Tait added a fifth as the Berwick side continued to look impressive.
A Biggar consolation with 15 minutes to play made it 5-2 before Gibb wrapped up a great day for the Ammies with the sixth.
The win, their third of the season, puts Tweedmouth fifth in the B Division with ten points from their five games played. Hawick and Duns head the table on 15.
Berwick Colts 1
Berwick Colts went down to a disappointing 6-1 defeat away to Newtown in the B Division of the Border Amateur League. They trailed 4-0 at half-time and their only goal was scored by J Robertson.
The defeat leaves the Colts eighth in the B Division table with four points from their five games played.
Tweedmouth Harrow 8
St Boswells 2
Tweedmouth Harrow stormed through to the semi-finals of the Collie Cup with a commanding 8-2 home win over St Boswells at the Billendean.
The Berwick side were in control throughout and a 5-1 lead at half-time put them in the driving seat.
Jonny Simpson netted a hat-trick with Martyn Tait bagging two and single strikes from Sean Simpson, Robin Brown and Grant Leiper.
Highfields United 6
Highfields also made it through to the semi-finals of the Collie Cup with a 6-3 home win over Melrose.
Ryan Wedderburn and Mark Purvis both scored two and there were also goals from Michael Yule and Kevin France.
Melrose made a fight of it, particularly in the first half, and at the break they only trailed by one goal at 3-2, but after the break the Berwick side stamped their authority on the match to go through to the last four.
* Fixtures for the Berwick sides for this Saturday (September 15) are:
B League - Lauder v Berwick Colts; C League - Hawick Legion Rovers v Highfields United; Tweedmouth Harrow v Selkirk Victoria. Tweedmouth Amateurs do not have a fixture.
