Handymen workers to be employed in Berwick
The recruitment process for two seasonal handymen to work in Berwick is under way.
The posts have been created through a partnership between Berwick Town Council and Northumberland County Council.
It is envisaged the handymen will be responsible for maintenance issues such as seat repairs, play park maintenance and possibly litter clearance.
Councillor Gordon McLean said: “It’s grassroots stuff but hopefully they will have an impact and clean the town up a bit.”
Mayor Hazel Bettison added: “They are to enhance the town. Northumberland County Council will still do its work.”
The town council has budgeted more than £35,000 for the workers, although only half of this is salary.
Councillor Georgina Hill has opposed the plans in the belief it does not represent value for money, especially when the council increased its precept by £33,000 last week.
