Half releases first album on own label
A Berwick born music producer is set to release his debut album, which has already been described as a '˜masterpiece'.
It was an online music project that led producer Half, aka Jonny Gray, to compile his first album, Here Lies Half.
Half, who was born and raised in Berwick and lived in the town for nearly 30 years, has collaborated with artists and co-writers around the world and recorded his debut full length release in isolation, swapping a series of ideas, emails and dropboxes, then mixing the results to create the album.
He said: “I started making music for fun and never really thought about doing anything with it as I’m not a proper musician. I got into sampling and mixing music on my iPad and started uploading it online, sharing files backwards and forwards with people all over the world, such as Mexico, Egypt and Bulgaria.
““I gradually built up a collection of tracks by working with session musicians, who I hired through Fiverr after trailing through their profiles and videos to find the right people to work with.
“The idea was I commissioned each of them to play certain pieces of music for a specific track to help me create the overall sound I was looking for. Some of them went really well, while others didn’t and they ended up on the cutting room floor.”
Half describes his music as guitar-based ambient instrumentalism and takes influence from the likes of Rian Eno, Sigur Ros and Boards of Canada.
The 10-track album is being released by Half on his on label Border Series, which he launched to help other artists around the world.
