The Jewson building chain is giving away £250,000 across the UK to allow local initiatives across the UK to access free building materials they can then use.

The company has local outlets in Berwick, Galashiels and Hawick. Applicants can nominate a project for a main prize of £150,000 to transform a building, or they can share a £100,000 regional prize fund, asking for anything from £500 to £10,000.

Borders MP Calum Kerr said: “This competition is called Building Better Communities and presents a real opportunity for local projects to win something which could be of huge help to them.

“They might want a new roof for a village hall, or perhaps an extension for their sports club or the renovation of a building – or it might be something less grand but still very important for the group in question. I’d encourage local groups to apply. A big enough award of free building materials could make a real difference.”
