Grounds to push for A&E

We have won the first round in having the hospital as a single unit. Congratulations, everyone.

Let’s continue the fight by having an A&E department and more beds.

Before continuing, however, I would like to thank all the staff at Berwick Infirmary preparing patients for the horrendous journey south on the A1, with the limited equipment at their disposal.

I would be the first to admit that our population does not justify an A&E department. However, there are other factors to be considered, viz distance and time.

Coun Peter Jackson has already given us tremendous support by admitting that Cramlington Hospital was built in the wrong place.

The A1 provides more grounds. In many places it is little more than a cart track and frequently traffic is slowed to a crawl by slow moving farm machinery.

I consider a hospital with 16 beds is laughable if it weren’t so serious.

Surely it is better to have an empty bed, rather than a person die through lack of one.
