His first event was the Gi where he won with an armbar over an opponent from Ireland.

He then contested the ‘absolute’ division where he had two tough fights to qualify for the final.

In the final he came face to face with a Checkmat team-mate from Rome, but he managed to succeed and take his second gold.

The final event was the No Gi division and Thiago faced an old opponent from South Africa, who is based in London.

“This time I put a very fast pace into the start of the match,” he said, “forcing him to stay on his back foot all the time. After two minutes of the fight, I started to change levels and secure a take down (by single leg) and with that I won another new division in my carrier, now I have a middle heavy weight gold for my collection.

“As soon as the tournament finished I spent two days in Frankfurt, with a black belt and team mate, Valmyr Neto, who also won his division.

“In Frankfurt we had a chance to meet new guys in a seminar held by Valmyr Neto in a local gym.

“Now I am back in the UK I will start working hard this week for the busy competition calendar that I will face this year.

“I will also concentrate on my students’ progress, because they are important to me too. I want them to succeed and be the best they can be.”
