Berwick Preservation Trust has agreed to pay half of the costs, with the rest coming from Councillor Jim Smith’s small schemes pot.

Berwick Town Council, which had expected to incur some of the costs, will now pay nothing.

Councillor Catherine Seymour said: “Berwick Preservation Trust have done excellent work for years to restore heritage buildings and it’s very much appreciated by the town council and the public that they are going to provide part of the money for this valuable monument.”

The trust, which carried out the restoration of the Dewar’s Lane Granary, will lead on the project.

Ian Douglas, trust vice chairman, said a local contractor would carry out the work. Weather permitting, and assuming quick confirmation, it is hoped the work can be done by the end of March.
