The funds will be used to provide tools for community groups to tidy up retail centres in Berwick, Tweedmouth and Spittal.

It will also be used to provide training on safely cleaning areas, and for promotional activities to support a reduction in waste at source and to promote the need to prevent litter and reduce the need for cleanups.

“Litter clean-ups are only one part of the solution,” said town clerk Gareth Davies. “Litter prevention long-term is the only answer.”

Steps such as discouraging single-use plastic bottles and coffee cups, and educational programmes aimed at young people could also be considered.
