Friends of Chain Bridge AGM
The fifth annual meeting of The Friends of the Union Chain Bridge will be held in Horncliffe Memorial Hall on Thursday, October 11, at 7pm.
This is the most important year to date for the Friends, with a bid about to be made to the Heritage Lottery Fund for critical funds to secure the repair and restoration of the oldest vehicular suspension bridge in the world, approaching its bicentenary.
The keynote speaker is Stephen K Jones, an engineering historian, who contributed a chapter on the Brown Lenox chainworks to the late Gordon Brown’s acclaimed history of the Union Bridge. He will be supported by two other speakers. Conservation architect Chris Baglee will talk about conservation processes, with examples of archival material from the bridge; and Jane Miller will discuss heritage activities and opportunities for the local communities to become involved in the project. All are welcome to attend.
