La-Garenne-Colombes, just to the west of Paris, is looking for twinning opportunities with an English town and has approached Berwick Town Council to see if it would be interested.

Berwick already has twinning links with Haan in Germany, Sarpsborg in Norway, Trzcianka in Poland, Casey in Australia and Berwick, Pennsylvania, USA.

Mayor Gregah Roughead said: “I think this is a fantastic opportunity for Berwick and a good chance for us to promote ourselves in Europe.”

He said it would be the town council’s first twinning opportunity, the rest of its twinning links having been established under the former borough council.

Coun Ivor Dixon was also in favour but pointed out that there would be budget issues.

He also added that some of the town’s twinning links had dwindled away in recent years.

“I am all for it but we need to get together and discuss the pros and cons,” he said.

Coun Hazel Bettison said: “We are just over the water from France so it would be nice if we could do it. It would be much easier to maintain links than with Casey or Berwick, Pennsylvania, which is a bit of a trek.”

The council has agreed to form a town twinning working group to discuss the proposal further and report back to the communities sub-committee.
