Forecast will be forgotten

Among the many doubtful future economic forecasts must be the one currently being put about by Northumberland County Council that the building that Cllr Peter Jackson calls '˜the new County Hall palace' will not further burden the taxpayer. Rather it, along with allied measures, will save the council £16million in the next 25 years.

Forecasting good news being announced in 2041 is a pretty safe ploy.

Whoever then would remember such a pledge being made back in the distant days of 2016?

Perhaps it might excite some future archivist and produce a column in your paper.

For the present, we have a Soviet-style reminder of two of the chaps who think this is such a grand wheeze in the form of giant poster photos all over the place.

In the circumstances, a little bureaucratic modesty might have been a little more becoming.

No doubt there are columns of figures and prepared statements galore ready to fling out at such naysayers as myself but after Brexit, we have all learnt a little more about the manipulation of both.
