Festival of exceptional music set to return to north Northumberland

A summer festival of international chamber music is set to take place in north Northumberland again this year.

Paxton House on the banks of the River Tweed will be hosting a series of concerts from July 15 to 24.

Opening this year’s Music at Paxton event on Friday, July 15, at 7.30pm, are Alina Ibragimova, one of the most accomplished and intriguing violinists of the younger generation, Cédric Tiberghien, a pianist whose career spans five continents, and cellist Pieter Wispelwey, whose original interpretation and technical mastery has won the hearts of critics and public alike.

The line-up throughout the week includes Pieter Wispelwey performing Bach’s solo cello suite, the Doric String Quartet, two recent Live Music Now Commissions in a special showcase the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Wind Soloists and many more.

Violinist Rachel Podger will be making her Music at Paxton debut joined by renowned fortepianist Kristian Bezuidenhout.

Winners of last year’s Wigmore Hall String Quartet, Van Kuijk Quartet will also make their Scottish festival debut alongside Angela Hewitt, one of the world’s leading pianists.

Granny Green will bring a brand new and quirky edge to the world of folk music with their performance at Paxton, which is suitable for all the family.

Closing this year’s festival with Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht and Brahms’ String Sextet are Scottish Ensemble.

In conjunction with Live Music Now Scotland and Paxton House, free one-hour taster concerts, Music at Paxton Plus, will return.

On Sunday, May 15, at 2.30pm, Foyle-Štšura Duo – Michael Foyle (violin) and Maxim Štšura (piano) – perform works by Ravel, Bartók, Elgar and Kreisler will perform.

And Sirocco Winds, a dynamic and professional wind quintet based in Glasgow will be on stage on Sunday, June 12, at 2.30pm.
